Forty years ago, the first of many Z® cars rolled off the production line - capturing the passion and enthusiasm of motoring fanatics all over the world. October 22nd, 1969 and was the Datsun 240Z was born.
The Datsun 240Z
This opened the market - competing with European manufactures; the new sports cars were inexpensive and not as temperamental, with the power to match their European counterparts. With the name, came value for money. The base model started at a reasonable $3,626.00. The 240Z incorporated the cutting-edge power package of 111.8kw through a 2.4ltr inline 6-cylinder. The quarter of a mile time worked out to be a staggering 17.1 seconds at 135.9kph.
The Nissan 260Z and 280Z Followed Soon After
In 1974, the 240Zs successor was announced with an increased power package too a 2.6ltr engine, named the 260Z, and again in 1975 the engine size increased to a 2.8ltr – with the 280Z. The domination of the Z® family not only were more prominent in the streets but showed strong form on the race track as well, with Peter Brock proving its strengths.
