The first databases were simply lists of information stored within the memory of a computer, and the methods available to access those lists were limited. Over time, techniques of accessing information quickly from knowledge storage modules were developed -- such as a search engine designed to find a word in a text document or a single name in a database that included thousands of names and addresses.
However, these linear search modules, or even the parallel versions that came later (in which several searches were carried out at once) were not suited for all types of data. Relational databases, such as that which forms the foundation for Google's success, store information in a different format from that of a "flat" representation. They show how pieces of information are structured with respect to other pieces of information.
Like a linear search, relational databases are also lacking in power for certain types of data processing.
