Famous for their bravery in battle, skill in warfare, extreme feasting, and tall tales, the Celts were the most warlike people decorating the European continent. Although they were made up of several different aggressive tribes, they were united by a common religion, a unique language, and a similar culture. While many Celtic warriors were about 175 centimeters (5 feet 8 inches) tall, a few of the Celtic warriors stood taller than 180 centimeters (6 feet). Many of them had blonde, red, or brown hair.
During the first millennium BCE, the Celtic tribes began migrating form their residents into central Europe and Asia. They settled in Ireland, the Balkans, Spain, northern Italy, and France. A few groups travel to Turkey and China, where they were known as the Galatians. The Roman legions defeated the Celtic warriors in many areas of Europe, but Ireland, which the Romans never conquered, small Celtic Kingdoms prospered until the medieval era.
Celtic Warfare Tactics
Although Celtic warfare primarily involved local clashes and cattle raids, the Celts also fought full-scale battles. The Celtic warriors violently attacked Rome in 390 BCE and later the Greek city of Delphi in 279 BCE. The Celtic warriors terrified their enemies before battle with their physical appearance, ear-splitting screams, banging swords on their shields, and sounding their animal-headed war trumpets.
