The highlight of high school for many students is attending the prom. When a student has a disability, however, attending the prom may seem like an impossible dream. With a little extra planning and consideration, going to the prom can be just as much fun for a disabled student as any other student.
Location of the Dance
Is the dance being held in the school’s gym? Is it being held in a hotel? Or is it being held in some other locale in the community? This is one of the first things a disabled student will need to find out about after you decide to attend. No matter the location of the prom, the student with the disability will need to be the one responsible for locating the accessible entrance and the accessible restrooms.
If the prom is being held in a location that is not wheelchair-friendly, don’t automatically assume that attendance is out of the question. Make a case for equal access to this very special event and take it to the principal. If that doesn’t work, consider contacting members of a local disability advocacy group and taking the case directly to the school board.
