The summer fair is the jewel in most schools' PTA fundraising crowns. It's also, probably, the event that will require the most planning, organisation and help, so it's vital that you start early and get it right. Here are some top tips to help you on the road to success.
Set the Date Well Ahead
The first thing to do is to set a date for your fair. This can be more complicated than it sounds as you'll need to consider other local events including "rival" school fairs, church fairs, and of course major sporting or other events, both locally and nationally.
Once you've confirmed the date you'll also need to decide what time of day to run the fair and for how long. Some large PTAs with access to a lot of help manage full day events, but most schools tend to go for a duration of around three hours. In order to maximise revenue from refreshments, it's a good idea for your fair to span either lunchtime or tea time. A lunchtime/early afternoon fair can be great, but remember you'll have less time to set up beforehand. A tea-time/early evening fair can give you the opportunity to include an outdoor evening concert/entertainment or even an overnight family camp, but bear in mind that this will add significantly to your organisation/planning requirements.
