These Hallowed Grounds: Gettysburg National Military Park

The Gettysburg National Military Park appears today much like it did on July 1, 1863 when General Lee advanced his Army of the Potomac into northern territory and attempted to lay siege on the town and repel his invaders. By way of automobile, horseback, bicycle, or even a segue, visitors can tour the battlefield as little or much to their historical hearts desire. As McPherson’s Farm, Little Roundtop, Big Roundtop, and the High Watermark prove to be favorite stops on the tour, the Devil’s Den is a magnet for children who love to climb the boulders and explore the cavernous creases.

Lined with headstones that mark the final resting place of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, the National Cemetery marks the place where President Abraham Lincoln made his speech dedicating these “hallowed grounds.” His speech only lasted a few moments, but his words would be regarded as one of the most prolific moments in history. Uttering the feelings and sentiments of a nation who was grieving the loss of loved ones, Lincolns word would become one of the most profound speeches ever given by a US President. We know it today as the Gettysburg Address.
