It's Spring again – almost! Springtime once again signals that time-honored rite of passage, the high school prom. School girls dream about prom night from the time they're old enough to think about lipstick. Guys, too, look forward to donning tuxedos and ties and spritzin' up for a night on the town. Before limousines can roll out, however, prom committees across the country must come up with prom themes, ideas for prom decor and transform gymnasiums and ballrooms into nights to remember.

Prom Planning: Deciding Upon Prom Theme Ideas That Please Students

• When selecting a prom theme, it's helpful to adhere to a few basic guidelines to create a special night for as many students as possible.
• Keep the prom's theme generic. A general theme can incorporate those mini-themes that have struck students' fancy.
• Decide upon the tone you wish to achieve. Do you want your prom to be romantic? Whimsical? Nostalgic?
• Do you prefer blue skies and sunshine or nights among the stars? Is glitz and glam more popular with your students than fairytale dreams with puffy clouds and pretty flowers?
• Consider this year's trendy colors. Choose a theme that lends itself as a backdrop to these colors.
• Visit a card shop for color and theme ideas. Thumb through magazines with an eye for color and theme. Notice the advertisements. Take advantage of the mega-bucks advertisers spend on creating those ads. Their research can work for your prom's final product.
• Avoid themes that limit you to decorations that will break your budget. Themes off limits include those that generate few ideas in discussions about how to carry them throughout a venue.

Group Similar Mini-Theme Ideas Together Under Umbrella Themes

Prom committees will satisfy a larger number of those involved in planning, decorating and attending a high school prom if they brainstorm every possible theme on the radar and narrow themes down to several possible focal areas. Often event planners will discover a larger theme on the list that can envelope several of the smaller theme ideas and get more bang for the buck. It's always a plus when people feel that they came up with a theme that appealed to most of the event's attendees.
