Baby farming was one of the most heinous crimes of the Victorian era.

History of Baby Farms and Baby Farmers

In Victorian times, options were limited for poverty-stricken parents who could not afford to feed their children; single mothers facing the crushing stigma of raising an illegitimate child; or single parents who needed to work during the day.

Decades before child protection legislation, or the regulation of adoption, fostering and childcare facilities, “baby farms” sprang up across the United Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

How Baby Farmers Operated

For an upfront fee, or a regular payment, baby farmers took unwanted children off the hands of their parents. Once the money ran out, the baby farmer’s interest in the well-being of the child usually disappeared. The baby farmers lived off the payments received from the parents, leaving little money to feed and clothe the unfortunate children.
